Multi-day fuel & water logistics plan
4–7 days road-trip spine · Road-trip · Best for: Self-drive Coral Coast travellers
Guide updated · verify Explore Parks WA / DBCA the morning you go
Planning skeleton for longer Coral Coast drives that may include Nyinggulara when open. Emphasises fuel, water, fatigue and contingency — not a fantasy “every beach” checklist.
Start base: Perth → Coral Bay → Exmouth (or reverse)

Perth to the North West Cape region is roughly 1,200+ km of sealed driving before soft sand even starts. Build fatigue management and overnight stops. This itinerary is a logistics spine, not a promise that every coastal node will be open.
Fill fuel and water at Coral Bay and Exmouth every time you leave town for the strip. No fuel or drinking water inside Nyinggulara. VERIFY Main Roads and DBCA alerts for live road and park status.
Park decision gate: only enter coastal tracks if open and vehicle/kit match. Otherwise skip without guilt — the marine park experience still exists from town.
Always re-check official sources. Planning guidance only.
Access, camping status, road conditions and marine weather change — verify on Explore Parks WA / DBCA and alerts.dbca.wa.gov.au before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.
Timeline
Trip design week
Map fuel and water, not beaches
List every overnight on sealed services first. Mark Coral Bay and Exmouth as mandatory full-service buffers. Decide whether Nyinggulara is in or out based on alerts and kit — not Instagram.
Legs 1–2
Long sealed days north
Build recovery nights. Watch wildlife at dusk. Do not arrive at soft sand exhausted. If the group is already cooked, delete strip ambitions early.
Gateway · Coral Bay
Full services buffer
Fuel to brim. Water top-up. Optional marine day. Re-check alerts. Decide southern strip yes/no with honesty.
Gateway · Exmouth
Full services buffer + tours
Fuel and water again. Optional whale shark / snorkel product in season. Final strip decision for any remaining days.
Park decision gate
Open + kit = maybe; closed = town product
If open and equipped: one designated campground block (Park Stay only) or a short day access with turnaround times. If not: snorkel/tour days from towns and continue the Coral Coast without inventing camps.
If camping happens
Systems first night
Toilet, water, waste, PLB, recovery gear — all proven before dark. One activity block next cool period only.
Exit south or fly out
Margin for breakdowns and weather
Leave buffers for heat, tyre issues and delayed tours. Reinflate tyres before highway speeds after any sand. Debrief logistics for the next Coral Coast trip.

Access & parking tips
- Never run the strip “on empty” hoping for a shortcut.
- Carnarvon is regional logistics, not a Ningaloo stay hub on this guide.
- Full services only in towns — treat that as law, not advice.
- Legal parking only; no dune parking for photos on the way through.
Skip if short on time / kit
- Stacking Perth→Exmouth as a single heroic day then soft sand the same evening
- Remote nights without PLB and water contingency
- Every beach on the map as a daily KPI
- Skipping Coral Bay or Exmouth full-service buffers
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- Self-drive Coral Coast travellers with multi-day sealed legs
- Groups who will prioritise fuel/water over FOMO beaches
- People who can delete strip camping without ruining the holiday
Decision gates
- If fatigue is high after sealed legs: town products only
- If alerts close the strip: skip without guilt
- If kit is incomplete: do not buy hero gear at the last servo and push on
What success looks like
- No empty-tank moments; no freestyle camps
- At least one excellent marine or coastal day completed safely
- A realistic kit list for a future dedicated Nyinggulara camping trip when open
Related coast access guides
- Soft-sand & corrugation driving realitiesIn-park access is defined by soft sand, corrugations and tidal creek crossings — not by sealed tourist loops. Air down for sand, carry recovery gear, and turn around before you need a stranger’s winch.
- Northern access context (Yardie Creek Road)Northern approaches use the Exmouth / Yardie Creek Road context toward the coastal strip. This is not a casual sedan run. Confirm live status — cyclone and seasonal damage can change the product overnight.
- Southern access context (Cardabia–Ningaloo / Bruboodjoo)Southern approaches use Cardabia–Ningaloo Road / Bruboodjoo access context. Coral Bay is the services gateway — not a substitute for in-park facilities (there are none).
- Beach walking & informal shore accessThere are no formal named walking tracks on the official Nyinggulara National Park page. Reality is beach walking and informal shore exploration near designated access and campgrounds (when open). Do not expect signposted gorge circuits — those belong to Cape Range National Park, a different park.
