Park overview & areas

Nyinggulara National Park (ex-Ningaloo; still commonly called Ningaloo) protects a remote coastal strip on the Ningaloo Coast World Heritage Area, adjacent to Ningaloo Marine Park. We acknowledge Baiyungu, Thalanyji and Yinigurdira (Yinikurtura) Traditional Owners and joint-management context including Nganhurra Thanardi Garrbu in public materials. This guide does not retell restricted sacred stories.

Most successful visits start with live alerts, a town base (Exmouth or Coral Bay), and only then consider designated camping when open — not freestyle beach camps or invented walking tracks. Use this hub to pick a focus, then verify conditions on the official Explore Parks WA park page.

Remote Ningaloo Coast landscape from the air — arid ranges meeting reef waters

North Lefroy campground

Best for: Self-sufficient campers when officially open; beach access next to Ningaloo Marine Park waters

One of five designated Nyinggulara coastal campgrounds. When open: unpowered, no facilities, portable self-contained toilet mandatory. [VERIFY] Current status — all five campgrounds sustained significant damage from Cyclone Narelle impacts and require rebuilding; no reopening date published at last content review.

Access is remote 4WD country (soft sand, corrugations, tidal creek crossings depending on route). High-clearance 4WD with low-range recommended. No fuel or drinking water in the park — resupply Exmouth or Coral Bay. VERIFY road status via Main Roads WA, Shire of Exmouth and alerts.dbca.wa.gov.au.

Access · Exmouth & Coral Bay gateways

Best for: Everyone planning logistics before camping or day access

How visitors actually reach Nyinggulara: Learmonth Airport near Exmouth, long sealed drive from Perth (~1,200+ km), then high-clearance 4WD on park approaches. Northern access via Yardie Creek Road context; southern via Cardabia–Ningaloo / Bruboodjoo. No fuel or drinking water inside the park.

Perth → North West Coastal Highway → Minilya–Exmouth Road for the northern town base. VERIFY Main Roads WA and Shire of Exmouth for live road status. Soft sand, corrugations and tidal creek crossings are normal on park tracks — not optional extras.

Self-sufficiency & safety realism

Best for: Every visitor — read before packing

The non-negotiable operator’s manual layer: no water/toilets/bins, limited-to-no emergency comms (especially post-cyclone), strong currents, extreme sun, 1080 baiting, fire rules, and soft-sand 4WD. If you are not fully prepared, stay in Cape Range or the towns.

Safety applies on every access route — not only at campgrounds.
